Unpopular Opinions

I have been thinking about it, and I have quite a few opinions that most people don’t share. Before I tell you about my unpopular opinions, I just want to state that I am in no way trying to hurt anybody with different views. I tried to keep them non controversial in an attempt to keep this post more entertaining than something to be debated. Now, here are ten of my unpopular opinions.

1. I don’t like wearing makeup. I personally think it’s a waste of time and money, and I don’t like how it feels on my face. I really only wear it on special occasions, and then I can’t wait to go home and wash it off. Major props to people who wear makeup every day and enjoy it.

2. I like Taylor Swift’s country music more than her pop music. I think her pop music is good, but I prefer her earlier music.

3. I think it’s way more fun to eat pizza and watch Netflix than to go out and party.

4. I don’t despise internet explorer with a passion like a lot of people do.

5. I don’t like to put my hair in a messy bun on lazy days. I think it’s uncomfortable and takes too long to put up, which contradicts the whole lazy day.

6. I think Burger King has the best fries.

7. I don’t find football to be even remotely entertaining. I really tried to enjoy it, but it just didn’t happen.

8. I think Harry and Hermione would have been the best couple. I will ship them forever.

9. When it comes to Oreos, I like the cookie way better than the cream.

10. I’m not very fond of romantic movies. There are very few that I actually enjoy. I just can’t get into them.

I actually love hearing about other people’s unpopular opinions. I think there is something so fascinating about people being able to think for themselves. Leave a comment and let me know if you share any of my opinions, or if you have any unpopular opinions of your own. I would love to hear your feedback!

A Few of My Favorite Things: April Edition

April is coming to an end, so I thought I would let you in on a few of my favorite things this month. Here is a list of things I have discovered and/or loved this month.
1. Music: I’m obsessed with Selena Gomez’s album, Revival. I can’t pick a favorite song, they’re all so good. I also love the band, Seafret. Their song, Oceans, is a masterpiece. Give it a listen if you haven’t already!

2. Television: Once Upon a Time and Criminal Minds are my favorite shows. Without spoiling the show for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, Once Upon a Time is a story of fairy tales that all seem to have a twist. I absolutely love Criminal Minds because it combines criminal mystery with psychological elements. I would strongly recommend watching these shows if you haven’t already, they’re both on Netflix! Lately, I’ve also been watching a lot of reruns of Full House. I love the warm and nostalgic feeling I get when I watch it.

3. Entertainment: My favorite YouTuber is Superwoman. Her videos are genuine and hilarious. I’ve been binge watching her videos for the past few weeks. Look her up on YouTube if you haven’t! Her username is iisuperwomanii.

4. Food: I love the quesalupas from Taco Bell. I tried one a couple weeks ago, and fell instantly in love. I order mine with beans instead of beef, with no tomatoes, and I add guac. I’m telling you guys, it tastes like heaven.

5. Apps: I’m obsessed with a game called Stack by ketchapp . This game is addictive and it has taken up all my free time. I regret nothing, by the way. I also like Groupon, Pinterest, and Neko Atsume.

6. Hiking: I took a hike through the woods earlier this month, and I absolutely loved it. Not only is it a great way to get exercise, but it’s an opportunity to clear your mind, get some fresh air, and view gorgeous scenery. I try to hike three times a week, but the weather has been crazy, so I haven’t gone out as much as I would like. I’m just waiting for a sunny day so I can go again! I would strongly recommend hiking if you need a way to cope with stress.

7. Blogging: This one may be obvious, but I absolutely love it. I have always kept my writing pretty private, but it feels so good to have people read my posts and provide feedback.

That being said, what have you been up to this month? Leave a comment below to let me know what some of your favorite things this month are.

Wisdom Wednesday: Taking the High Road

Here’s a little wisdom for your Wednesday. You might be thinking that a nineteen year old probably doesn’t possess a lot of wisdom, but you would be wrong, my friend. I have been hearing some very negative things lately, and I want to share with you how I deal with those situations.
Recently, somebody said something to me so cruel and rotten, that I felt like I had the air knocked out of me as I was thrown to the ground. I won’t repeat what was said to me because there is absolutely no room on my blog for that kind of negativity. Anyway, I won’t pretend that I didn’t briefly let it get to me. The thing is, once I thought about the situation, I realized how ridiculous it was. I mean, why on Earth would I let somebody get to me like that?
I realized that some people will always be cruel. They will always tell me exactly how I should be. They will always tell me that I’m not a good person. They will always tell me that I have no worth. From now on, I will tell them they are wrong. I am the only person who decides who I am. I am a good person. I do have worth. Basically, what I am trying to say is that who I am is not defined by someone else’s opinion of me. When I was in high school, I definitely would have been dwelling on this for weeks. I refuse to dwell on this now. I will not focus on cruelty when I can be spreading a message of positivity and kindnesses.
I’m not writing this to complain about negativity or to brag about myself (although, I am happy with my personal growth through these types of situations.) I’m writing this because I know how sometimes it feels like there is no good left in the world. Just spend five minutes on the internet, and I’m sure you will find something so cruel that it will make your skin crawl. Whenever you feel this way, just remember that for some reason, people spread more of what they hate than what they love. There is so much good in this world, I promise you that. Somewhere out there, someone is performing a random act of kindness, somebody just heard the words “I love you” for the first time, someone just changed their life around, and somebody just achieved a goal.
I know people are going to try to tear you down and strip away everything that makes you unique at some point in your life. They can try all they want, but they won’t accomplish anything as long as you don’t give them the power. That is easier said than done, I know, but you will learn. I promise that for every mean person, there are at least two kind people.
Now, back to my situation because I never specifically told you how I dealt with the problem. I surrounded myself with people who care about me. I spent time with my family and friends, the people who build me up. I’m also learning how supportive the blogging community is, and I truly appreciate your kindness. I realized that when so many people care about me, it would be silly to let someone so bitter and mean hurt me.
I don’t wish anything bad upon this person. Honestly, I pray that God softens their heart and brings goodness into their life. In a world that is so fond of spreading hate, I don’t want to add to it. I don’t want revenge, I just want people to be kind to each other.
I also pray that people are nothing but good to all of you. I know that is extremely unlikely, but I hope that you all will learn how to let go of negativity, and spread love and kindness.
I know that this post was probably just word vomit, but I hope you gained some inspiration from it.

Be kind always, my friends

I’m not a cat, so stop calling me.

Today, I was sitting in the middle school parking lot while waiting to pick my little brother up from school. Nothing eventful was happening until a group of middle school boys walked past my car and began shouting sexual things at me. That’s right, I was catcalled by 13 year old boys. I don’t even know where to begin with how wrong this is. Being catcalled is never not creepy, but there is something especially gross about it when young boys do it.

If these young boys don’t have a problem behaving this way with someone older than them, I can’t help but wonder how they treat the girls they go to school with. It is absolutely ridiculous that young girls and women are scared of what guys will do to them in public, but everyone should feel safe in school.
I don’t know where the discipline is. Perhaps there is none because objectifying women is still unfortunately common and “not a big deal.” Maybe there is no discipline because “boys will be boys” and “they’re just kids.” The problem with that logic is that those boys could very well grow into men that can’t hear the word “no.” I honestly pray that isn’t the case with these kids, but someone needs to do something to change the way they treat women.
Instead of just being angry about this, I wanted to use this situation as an opportunity to spread awareness. Please treat everyone with respect.
Be kind always.

I’m not an alien, I’m a vegetarian

I have been a vegetarian for a year and a half now, and I’m loving it. While I don’t regret my decision to not eat meat, I do find myself answering a lot of the same questions from various people. If you’re a vegetarian, I hope you get a kick out of this post. If you’re not a vegetarian, maybe this will clear things up for you a bit. Here is a list of common questions I get about vegetarianism, and my responses. Enjoy!

1. If you love animals so much, why are you eating their food?

You do realize I eat more than just salad, correct? I didn’t realize this slice of cheese pizza was meant for Miss Piggy. My bad.

2. Are you a member of PETA?

I do believe in animal rights, but no, I’m not a member of PETA.

3. Don’t you miss eating meat?

No. That’s why I stopped eating it.

4. So… what do you eat then?

Anything that I find delicious that doesn’t contain meat. Next question.

5. Do you eat eggs or dairy products?

Yes. There is a difference between vegetarians and vegans.

6. Are you just participating in some kind of trend?

Would that make my decision any less legitimate? What goes into my body is my decision. My reasons aren’t actually anyone’s business.

7. Would you eat meat if you were starving to death?

I’ve never been in that situation, so I can’t say for sure. I’m going to go with yes, though.

8. Will it offend you if I eat meat?

As long as it isn’t going into my body, you can eat as much meat as you want.

9. Where do you get your protein from?

Simple, any non meat source that contains protein. That was easy.

10. Are you ever going to eat meat again in your life?

I actually don’t have my whole life planned out. I don’t even know what I’m having for dinner tonight.

11. Really? You’re a vegetarian? I didn’t know that. That’s so weird!

I’m just a person who doesn’t eat meat. Please stop acting like I’m half unicorn, half cyclops. Thanks.

In all seriousness, I really don’t mind answering people’s questions about my diet. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and ask. Also, if you’re a vegetarian that frequently gets asked a question I left off the list, please leave a comment and tell me what it is.

I hope you enjoyed this post!

Healthy is not synonymous with skinny

I am very aware and accepting of the fact that bodies come in all shapes and sizes. I feel that it should be common knowledge that there is no one correct way to maintain something as complex and versatile as the human body, but it seems that this is scarcely known. I know in my own experience, I have heard these following phrases all too often:

“Don’t eat that. You don’t want to gain weight!”

“A minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.”

“Don’t you want to be skinny for bikini season?”

These phrases are all damaging on their own, but one key issue is that they are usually followed by this well meaning, but ignorant statement:

I just want you to be healthy.”

Perhaps that is true, but the people saying these things seem to be extremely uneducated about health. Repeat after me; healthy is not synonymous with skinny. Don’t get me wrong, there are many healthy skinny people, but not everyone’s body is designed to be thin and petite. Not only does this notion that healthy means skinny cause physical health problems, it is also damaging to one’s mental health.

Convincing someone that they are only healthy if they are skinny can cause behavior such as obsessive calorie counting and exercise, skipping meals, binging, and purging. Eating disorders are a growing problem, and we are encouraging them by convincing people that there is only one body type. Eating disorders can result in physical problems such as dehydration, low heart rate, ulcers, and osteoporosis. Mental issues such as depression and anxiety can also develop as a result of constantly shaming someone for their body. By telling people that their ultimate goal should be to be skinny and an unrealistic definition of healthy, we are actually telling them to sacrifice their bodies and well-being to look a certain way.

Make Like Elsa, and Let It Go

Disney princesses have a history of being unrealistic. Their hair constantly looks like it is professionally styled, they wake up effortlessly, and the first guy they meet is Prince Charming with whom they fall in love with at first sight. That being said, I think we can all learn a lesson from our favorite ice queen, Elsa. We all need to learn to let go of what is holding us back in life.

I will be the first person to admit that I have let other people’s opinions dictate my life. For so long the way I looked, what I was interested in, and my overall personality didn’t belong to me. I didn’t belong to me. I thought the key to happiness was the acceptance of others. I could not have been more wrong. I vividly remember instances where someone’s negative opinion of me would sting so bad that I would immediately change some aspect of myself so I would never have to feel that way again. No matter how much I changed myself, no matter how much others accepted me, I still was not happy. Just within the past twelve months, it finally hit me; what my parents and genuine friends had been telling me all along was true. The only acceptance I needed was my own.

The reason I am writing this is because I know how much pressure kids, teenagers, and even adults feel to fit in. Since I can’t go back and change how I handled that pressure, I am going to tell you exactly what I wish I could tell my younger self. I know you have probably heard all of this before, but just stick with me for a few more moments.

I know how cliché this all sounds, but take it from the person who has been in your situation and genuinely wants you to be happy; the opinion of others honestly does not matter. Even if you could somehow magically make everyone else on Earth like you, it won’t mean a damn thing if you don’t like yourself. Everybody is unique and brings something different to the table, so please don’t deprive the world of the unique and amazing person that you are. Sure, you have flaws, but I’m going to let you in on a secret; everybody has flaws. That’s right, I do, you do, and so does every single person you are trying to make happy by being some unrealistic definition of “perfect”. While we’re on the subject of perfect, I’m sure you’ve heard there is no such thing. That statement is absolutely correct. Just take a second to think about it. Everybody has a different definition of perfection, and there is no possible way you can match everybody’s. So please just try to be the best version of yourself that you can be, because you honestly have just as much of a say in what is acceptable, attractive, and interesting as everybody else does. Please please please (yes, this is me begging) just be yourself and be happy, because honestly, the only way you can be happy is by being yourself.

I hope you take my advice to heart, and will begin the ongoing process of not only accepting yourself, but proudly embracing who you are.
