I was scared to take antidepressants because of all of the negative things I have heard. Antidepressants won’t work for everyone, but you shouldn’t be scared to try them. Recovery is a trial and error process, and all options should be considered. Here is a list of common misconceptions about antidepressants:
1. Antidepressants cause a false sense of happiness: This is not accurate. Antidepressants cause serotonin levels to rise. Serotonin is the chemical responsible for happiness, but it does not directly cause happiness. Antidepressants make it possible to feel happy, but they won’t cause you to feel happy for no reason.
2. Antidepressants cause you to act robotic: This isn’t true in every case. In fact, pretending not to have emotions is a common defense mechanism, and that might be coming into play. Also, the recovery from depression is not a straight uphill slope. Recovery will fluctuate and that will cause changes in emotions and behavior. This is not due to medication.
3. The side effects aren’t worth it: This is honestly a personal call to make. When I first started taking medication, I experienced nausea, headaches, and drowsiness. The side effects only lasted a few weeks, and I’m glad I stuck with them. The outcome was better than the side effects, in my personal opinion.
4. You shouldn’t rely on medication for depression: Nobody would ever say that to someone who needs insulin or heart medication. In this case, my brain doesn’t naturally produce enough serotonin, and medication fixes that.
Remember that everyone reacts differently to antidepressants. I hope you are able to find the right treatment for depression.
Hey!
I’ve written a few posts myself on medication. It’s great that you’ve become aware of the good AND bad!
I’m loving your blog (followed!) but I would also like to invite you to submit a short piece to my own. I think your perspective and style of writing would be a perfect piece for my project.
It’d also be a great way to get your blog/writing out there.
Please feel free to email me (jennifer@youngandtwenty) with more questions, or take a look at the ‘BEING Young & Twenty’ page on my blog.
I hope I’ll hear from you 🙂

Thanks for this post. It definitely clears up the misconceptions you have raised, something I have never thought about blogging myself and I have heard one or two things you clear myself, when i first started having antidepressants. When facing to take antidepressants, it can be a scary place, not just where you feel as a person, but wondering if you are making the right choice to take antidepressants because what other people tell you. I have shared your post on my blog.

Thank you for taking time to read and share. It definitely can be scary admitting you need help, and even scarier when you don’t know what to expect. I’m glad I could clear some things up.

Anti depressants can be such a taboo subject sometimes. People who have told me they’re taking them often whisper it to me. I take them too and I’m always loud and proud about it. I want others to know that if if helps, then why the hell not?

I was so scared to tell people I take antidepressants because of the stigma surrounding them. Luckily, everyone I care about is supportive. I think there is something so brave about getting help and embracing it.

Well I think you’re very brave and am very proud of you for speaking out about it! I know for me, it’s helped me keep sane, I’ve stopped overthinking trivial matters and am now level headed!! I’ve got 4 kids and I’m now able to enjoy them and they see a much happier mum. My marriage is now so wonderful (even though my husband is very supportive if I decide to stop taking them).
I wish you all the luck in the world, be proud of yourself ❤️
